Exceptionally elegant, perfumed Mencía showing notes of crunchy red berry fruit, enhanced by a sheen of coconut and cinnamon from three months' ageing in American oak. Medium bodied, with clean acidity, dusty tannins and a tangy, moreish finish. So good!
Drinks well on its own, but is even better with tapas, canapés and crispy pork belly.
Fashionable Mencía (it is universally adored by wine aficionados) is an indigenous Galician grape most closely associated with the cool-climate, granite-and-slate-terrained DO of Bierzo, in north-west Spain. Formerly rustic, today's renditions tend to be suave, polished and sexy. A small amount of Garnacha (Grenache) is sometimes blended with it. The bodega says that La Mano is “built for pleasure”.
